"Joy of Living Level 1" Meditation Retreat

Many uses the Buddha as the object of form meditation and the Serene Buddha smiles back to the meditators...
A friend who was just reading Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche's books saw the poster on the 2 days "Joy of Living level 1" meditation retreat organised by his local centre, Tergar Singapore, at Poh Ming Tse Temple and invited me to sign up with her. I had no idea who he is then but as I was also looking for short-term meditation retreat, I just signed up without knowing what to expect. Later, she lent me the "Joyful Wisdom" which upon flipping the 1st few pages, I found it to be so smooth reading that I decided to get the 2 books myself.  Through reading his books, I get to know that he was also one of those meditators, along with Ven. Matthieu Ricard  involved in the MRI testing of Happiness mentioned by Meng, in his recent talk.
I did not managed to finish reading the books before the retreat in the short time frame, and went there still without expectation. Nevertheless, no regrets, it is really an eye-opener on the flow of teachings "provided by Rinpoche", which is well facilitated by Ani. An unconventional refreshing way of teaching, focusing on teaching methods to apply in daily lives. I am looking forward to their level 2 & 3 retreat but before that we have to accomplish the homework set by Rinpoche as it will still take some time for us to digest all the teachings taught over the last 2 days and build up our foundation. I had only known Vajrayana Buddhism via their prayers and mantra chanting, so this meditation aspect is a new experience and new aspect of it revealed.
Joy of Living retreat is Definitely one that I will strongly recommend to my friends, especially the beginners, to meditation. Not to reveal the details but for you to discover by attending yourself if there is another retreat coming up.
Find out more at http://tergar.org/,
or join them at their monthly Meditation practice & text study session one of the Sundays of the month, 2.30-5.30pm at Taipei Buddhist Centre (near Lavender MRT) Meditation room at level 3.

The text study sharing session on the Chinese or English version of the book: Joyful Wisdom is very enriching, very reflective. Hope there is no obstacles to attend their future sessions.

Reflecting, while Rinpoche was in 4.5 years' retreat, we were being taught by Anilas during JOL workshops using prerecorded DVDs as well as monthly practice by Anila who really comprehended well in Rinpoche's books and shared with us the teachings.
She is receptive to feedbacks and fine-tuned the group practice schedule over time to ensure we benefited from the monthly practices.
Recalling, quite enjoyed the small group discussions during reading club sessions where Anila and the seniors shared their experience. From them, I learnt and really benefitted from the monthly practices.
In Gratitude..._/|\_

What is the Joy of Living?

The Joy of Living is a path of meditation practice that can be followed by anyone, regardless of religious or cultural orientation. Meditation enables us to discover a lasting contentment that is not subject to the fluctuating conditions of the external world, and to nurture the qualities of wisdom and compassion that naturally manifest from awareness itself.

Though rooted in the ancient Buddhist teachings of Tibet, the practices taught in the Joy of Living are not religious in nature. They deal with basic functions of the mind, such as mindful awareness and the movements toward happiness and away from suffering. In working with these qualities of mind, we gradually transform our relationship to present–moment experience, learning to approach every thought, feeling, and sensory experience with unconditional warmth and acceptance.

The Joy of Living program contains three levels:

Calming the Mind
Opening the Heart
Awakening Wisdom

Level I: Calming the Mind

In the first level of the Joy of Living, Mingyur Rinpoche teaches how awareness meditation can be used to create a peaceful mind and joyful heart. Awareness meditation allows us to use any situation or experience, even difficult emotions and physical pain, as a gateway to inner peace.

In this level, you will learn:

How to rest in open awareness, a state of spacious and alert presence
How to use visual objects, sounds, tastes, and other sense objects as supports for awareness in meditation
How to transform your relationship to physical pain, difficult emotions, and destructive thought patterns using the practice of awareness meditation
How to deal with distractions and obstacles in meditation, such as excessive thought activity, sleepiness, and discouragement
How to start a daily meditation practice, including the correct meditation posture and the ideal length of a meditation session

Level II: Opening the Heart

In the second level of the Joy of Living, Mingyur Rinpoche teaches how meditating on love, compassion, joy and equanimity can open our hearts to the world around us and decrease the self-fixation that lies at the root of suffering.

In this level, you will learn:

How our tendency to fixate on our own wellbeing creates anxiety and suffering
How positive mental states like love and compassion erode the causes of dissatisfaction
How these positive mental states can be cultivated through meditation
How ordinary experiences, and even “negative” factors like difficult emotions and physical pain, can be transformed into sources of empathy and compassion using the practice of meditation

Level III: Awakening Wisdom

In the third level of the Joy of Living, Mingyur Rinpoche offers guidance on the practice of insight meditation, a profound form of meditation that uproots the causes of anxiety and suffering.

In this level, you will learn:

How to use insight meditation to break through the distorted ideas that create confusion and suffering
How to see beyond superficial thoughts and emotions to the basic goodness that lies within
How our rigid beliefs about ourselves and the world around us keep us locked in a cycle of dissatisfaction and anxiety
How to see things as they actually are, rather than the mistaken version of reality that we project onto the world

Ready to Get Started?

Starting to meditate isn’t as difficult as you might think. If you’re ready to begin, you can start by taking our free Intro to Meditation course on the Tergar Learning Community website. When you are ready for more, you can attend a Joy of Living Level I workshop at one of our many local groups and centers or online at the Tergar Learning Community website.

Q&A:
